Fire Departments of Delmarva | the Crisfield Volunteer Fire Company

The Crisfield Volunteer Fire Company is located in Somerset County, just a short distance from the downtown area and docks at the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. While I've had the chance to see a few of their vehicles here and there, and to stop recently for the pictures of the firehouse itself, I haven't been inside or seen the rest of the apparatus.

From the website here is a brief introduction to their history: "According to City records found a City Hall in the late 1970s. Crisfield formed its first Vol. Fire Co. in the year 1874 by purchasing 96 feet of ladders and 50 buckets for a fire brigade. Two years later in 1876 John E. N. Sterling Bailiff for the City authorized the purchase of 48 white cedar buckets at a cost of 30 cents per bucket. He also purchased six axes and a 30-foot hook ladder. During the same year he acquired a bell from William T. Lawson to be used as a fire alarm bell. The bell was placed in a location where it could be kept in a locked enclosure were only the bailiff and certain persons would have access to it." See the complete background here.

These photos were taken in July '16 at an event in the downtown area.

A few pictures of the station, taken in April 2017.

What is Altered Art.....? Well, it's not the perfectly pristine and professional portraits of your family on the beach....nor are these the stunning photographs of global landmarks taken at just the right time during a sunset....these images aren't quite as polished because I'm not a professional, but rather someone who seeks to capture unique and different views of the people and events, faces and places, that I see all across our beautiful Delmarva Peninsula. I hope the "heart" comes through.
